ABO announces end to phase-in period

The American Board of Optometry (ABO) has announced the timetable for the expiration of the Phase-In Rules of the ABO’s Board Certification process.

ABO plans for future, addresses misconceptions

As the second round of candidates for American Board of Optometry (ABO) board certification completed the examination slated from Nov. 28 to Dec. 11, representatives discussed the next steps for the profession.

Medicare incentive programs

The Medicare Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS), formerly known as the Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI), this year offers a 1 percent bonus when practitioners report performing specified quality measures. For details, see the AOA Web site PQRS page (www.aoa.org/PQRS).

The Medicare PQRS Maintenance of Certification (MOC) offers an additional 0.5 percent bonus for practitioners who successfully participate in the PQRS program over a 12-month period as well as participate in a qualified maintenance of certification program such as the American Board of Optometry (ABO) certification initiative. To qualify for incentive payments, practitioners must exceed the minimum participation levels for the certification program. ABO elects new officers, updates litigation status

The American Board of Optometry (ABO) elected new officers during its 2011 Annual Meeting Oct. 12, 2011, in Boston, Mass. 

The slate of new officers is as follows: Chairman Paul C. Ajamian, O.D.; Vice-Chairman James M. Vaught, O.D.; Secretary Barbara L. Reiss, O.D.; and Treasurer Robert P. Nyre, O.D.

ABO recognized as ‘fully qualified’ for PQRS by CMS

October 14, 2011

 The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that the American Board of Optometry (ABO) has qualified for purposes of the 2011 Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program Incentive.

ABO releases results of inaugural exam, announces new board member

October 14, 2011

The American Board of Optometry (ABO) announced the release of the results of its inaugural Board Certification Examination given in June.

Of the 489 Active Candidates completing the examination, 453 (92.6 percent) were successful in becoming diplomates of the ABO. The diplomates are from 45 states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Read the rest of this entry ?

AOA HOD topics include board certification, defense fund

The AOA House of Delegates (HOD) adopted five resolutions at Optometry’s Meeting® this year. Two resolutions referred to the House without recommendation by the Resolutions Committee failed to be adopted.  In addition, seven resolutions were withdrawn from consideration by their sponsors.

Adopted resolution 1 “encourages the affiliated state associations, their leadership and members to join the APHA (American Public Health Association) and state public health associations.” For the first time, an optometrist, Melvin Shipp, O.D., incoming dean of The Ohio State University College of Optometry, is serving as the president of the APHA. AOA recognizes progress of ABO

During the first two weeks in June, nearly 500 doctors of optometry took the inaugural American Board of Optometry (ABO) certification exam.  This represents a significant milestone in the profession-wide effort to establish board certification, and maintenance of certification, for optometrists, a process well-known to medicine and the public for many years.

“As one of the founding organizations of the ABO, the AOA congratulates all involved in moving this process to fruition,” said AOA President Dori Carlson, O.D.  “This is a major step forward in providing optometrists with a voluntary method to advance their knowledge and credentials. All optometrists who seek board certification should have the highest level of support for making advancements to our profession and moving us forward as a whole. ABO opens examination registration process

The American Board of Optometry (ABO) announced the opening of examination registration for the inaugural Board Certification Examination scheduled for June 1-18, 2011, at more than 400 Prometric Test Centers in the United States and throughout the world.

Active Candidates who have met the post-graduate requirements will be able to access the examination registration process on their MyABO portal on the ABO Web site.

The ABO has set the Examination Registration Fee at $1,250 throughout 2011, though this will increase to $1,500 in 2012. Read the rest of this entry ?

American Board of Optometry joins National Quality Forum

The American Board of Optometry (ABO) has been accepted as a member of the National Quality Forum (NQF).  As an accrediting body of optometric board certification, the ABO will be a member of the Quality Measurement, Research and Improvement (QMRI) Council of the NQF.

The National Quality Forum (NQF) is a nonprofit organization that operates under a three-part mission to improve the quality of American health care by: 

  • Building consensus on national priorities and goals for performance improvement and working in partnership to achieve them;
  • Endorsing national consensus standards for measuring and publicly reporting on performance; and
  • Promoting the attainment of national goals through education and outreach programs.
