Sullins Award recognizes service to InfantSEE

Michigan optometrist Jeff Kenyon, O.D., accepts the Admiral David Sullins, O.D., award for his dedication to the AOA’s public health program, InfantSEE.  Also on stage is last year’s winner, Jeff Anastasio, O.D., second from left.  The InfantSEE program provides no-cost vision assessments to children during their first year of life.  Also on stage, at left is InfantSEE Chair Glen Steele, O.D., and AOA Immediate Past President Randy Brooks, O.D.

House of Delegates approves two resolutions on Thursday

June 17, 2011

The AOA’s House of Delegates passed resolutions Thursday encouraging membership in the American Public Health Association and supporting the objectives of the Healthy People 2020 initiatives that cover vision. Both had unanimous support. The House also heard a report by Barry Barresi, O.D. Ph.D., the association’s executive director. Today, the House is slated to take up additional resolutions.

Senator Boozman Accepts AOA Optometrist of the Year Honors

Capitol Hill, Washington, DC (June 9, 2010) – U.S. Senator John Boozman, OD (R-AR), left, is presented with the AOA’s 2011 Optometrist of the Year Award by Jon Hymes, Director of the AOA’s Washington Office. Senator Boozman, a former five-term U.S. House member who challenged and defeated an incumbent senator in 2010, is a leader in Congress on health care policy and patient access issues. He’s authored and been a driving force behind bills to establish a National Vision Center of Excellence to help deliver quality eye care to military personnel and veterans, to make healthy vision for children a top priority and to crack down on unscrupulous contact lens sellers. Senator Boozman, who has maintained AOA membership since graduating in 1977 from Southern College of Optometry, credits his experiences in caring for patients and launching and growing his practice over 25 years for shaping his outlook as a public official.

State leaders learn more about Kentucky legislative victory

At Optometry’s Meeting in Salt Lake City, leaders from affiliated and state optometric associations learned more about the hard work and concerted planning that led to an important step forward in patient care in Kentucky.  Bill Reynolds, O.D., explained how the process began with the governor, and concluded with a public television broadcast that included Ben Gaddie, O.D. (on screen) and AOA Trustee David Cockrell, O.D.

AOA honors accomplishments of professionals in optometry

The 2011 Optometry’s Meeting® Opening General Session will highlight the accomplishments of the four recipients of the AOA annual awards.

The Opening General Session, sponsored by Essilor, will also feature keynote speaker Erin Brockovich.

The Distinguished Service Award recognizes Brian Klinger, O.D., for his unusually significant contributions to the profession of optometry.

Williamson remembered as leader in optometry, community

Don E. Williamson, O.D., is being remembered as a longtime leader in optometry, South Florida health care, and the Cape Coral, Fla., community. Dr. Williamson, 67, died May 23 following a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Dr. Williamson received both the AOA Optometrist of the Year Award (1996) and Distinguished Service Award (2005). SECO International honored him with its Distin-guished Service Award (2010) and its Optometrist of the South Award (2003). The Florida Optometric Associa-tion (FOA) presented him its Florida Optometrist of the Year Award (1988), Optometrist of the Decade Award (1995), and Lifetime Achievement Award (2009). Malmer, past AOA communications director, remembered for contributions

Reynold L. Malmer, who served as the AOA’s chief staff communicator for more than 30 years, passed away suddenly May 19. He was 82 years old and lived in St. Louis.

Malmer retired as director, AOA Communications Center, on Aug. 31, 1995, after a public relations career that spanned decades. Originally from Minnesota, he came to work for the AOA in 1964. His work for the association included several communications programs that were considered innovative for their times, including the National Consumer Communications Program (NCCP), a national advertising program AOA ran from 1978 to 1981.  Read the rest of this entry ?

Carlson will be first woman to assume office of AOA president

Teamwork. Family. Advocacy. Proactive Patient Care and Outreach.

These are among the top priorities of Dori Carlson, O.D., when she assumes the office of AOA president at Optometry’s Meeting® in Salt Lake City this month.

Upon taking office, she will become the first female president of the AOA.

“Being the first female is a milestone and a tremendous honor,” said Dr. Carlson, who practices in Park River, N.D. “Despite this, I have often said I wanted to be president of the AOA because I had earned it, not just because I was a woman.
