During “Integrating Social Media into Your Practice’s Marketing – The Pros and Cons,” Janice Gaub, senior director of Marketing, Social Media and Internet at CooperVision, spoke about how social media can help transform practices and improve the relationships between eye care practitioners (ECPs) and their patients, and provided suggestions for how ECPs can get started. Estrada gives ‘sightations’ to raise eye health awareness

July 23, 2010

Taking healthy sight awareness to the streets of New York City, Transitions Optical teamed up with Erik Estrada of the famed ‘70s TV show “CHiPs” to educate consumers about the importance of proper eye care and eyewear. As a Healthy Sight officer dressed in full uniform, Estrada led the Healthy Sight Patrol through high-traffic areas of the city to issue “Sightations” to those not properly caring for their eyes. Individuals received Sightations for violations such as “Visual Abandonment” and “Indecent Exposure” and had the opportunity to get their photo taken with Estrada. Read the rest of this entry ?

AOA Call-to-Action: ODs Urged to Contact Local School Officials and Help Define New Children’s Vision Services at School-Based Health Centers

July 21, 2010

With the enactment of national health care overhaul legislation in March, the AOA is now closely monitoring the “implementation phase” of the new law which will extend over the next several years.  This week, a Federal agency announced that school-based health centers (SBHCs) have until September to begin applying for new Federal funding which they can use to meet the dramatically expanded operating objectives that have been set for them by Congress and the President.  This is important to Optometry and others in the eye health community because – at the urging of AOA – Congress included a provision in the overhaul bill to include vision health services in the care to be provided to tens of millions of school-aged children by SBHCs.  Given the time frame for funding decisions to be made at the local level, the AOA is providing background information and recommended steps that can be taken today by ODs who want to make vision health services more accessible to school-aged children in their communities.   Click here to learn more about SBHCs and to view a map of SBHCs nationwide.

URGENT OUTREACH OBJECTIVE:  It is recommended that affiliates and AOA members to take action now to maximize opportunities for ODs to further improve the vision health and learning potential for school-aged children in their communities.  These recommended actions, which follow-up on successful AOA advocacy efforts to ensure inclusion of vision health services in school-based health clinics,  are needed to further solidify the role of optometrists as leading community-based resources on eye health and vision care and to help children with undiagnosed and untreated vision problems overcome a broken system that has had no accountability for tracking children into care.  By strengthening contacts with local officials now, ODs can help ensure that SBHCs across the country will be able to offer OD-provided comprehensive eye exams to children who need them.  Read the rest of this entry ?

A thank you to all

July 20, 2010

It seems difficult to believe that my term as AOA president will be over in a few days.  This has been an incredibly challenging time to be in a leadership position in a state or national professional organization, and I am both honored and privileged to have served the profession as your president this past year.

I have also had the distinct pleasure of working with a number of very talented and dedicated state affiliate officers and state executive directors. Your affiliate association is the frontline within your state, and they have their finger on the pulse of local and state issues affecting the profession. I thank each and every state leader and executive director for their assistance and guidance over the past year. Read the rest of this entry ?

EHR course instructors urge: do ‘homework’ now

July 20, 2010

From kindergarten to college, teachers commonly issue homework assignments to help students review their lessons and test their understanding of the materials covered in class.

However, when it comes to the implementation of electronic health records (EHRs), optometrists and their office personnel will probably want to do some homework before attending programs such as the AOA Health Information Technology and Telemedicine Committee’s (AOA-HITTC) “Enhancing Patient Care through the Implementation of Electronic Health Records” (EHRs) continuing education course, instructors say.

There are a number of relatively simple but important steps that optometrists and staff in virtually any practice can immediately take to develop a basic familiarity with health information technology (HIT) and determine the basic facts they will need to assess how EHRs will impact their practice, instructors told course attendees.
